Electronic Arts expects revenue from digital downloads of its games to overtake sales of boxed game software within a few years and is focussed on expanding its array of mobile and free-to-play products, its chief operating officer said.

EA and major rivals Activision Blizzard and Take-Two Interactive Software are struggling to sustain revenue growth as gamers migrate to casual and social games on the Internet and on mobile devices.

I think that's realistic, especially with internet connections getting faster and faster. My last boxed game was codwaw. Rest since then have been through steam or other digital services.

All my COD and BF games are retail boxes. I always like the fact of having a backup disk ready when I need it.

I guess I'm the opposite way. I can't stand boxed copies. Haven't bought a boxed copy game in ages, and was on a roll until Blizzard forced Boxed copies on the early sales of StarCraft II. Reading Physical media is slow, and ontop of that I then have to store the jewel cases somewhere, and just not needed in this day and age. My next build won't have a dvd drive. Everything worth a damn can be installed without the need for a disc. I look back on the 5 installation cd's of BF2 and cringe. Physical media is dead, or should be.
