Steam forums hacked?

I got an email promoting a hack site from [email protected] to the email address I used for the steam forums. Their forums have been offline ever since.

From Google cache

The email you received could be fake though. People are known to send someone emails and say it is from someone else. And if they were bothered to make an account with a free web-host they could easily send emails and say it is from someone completely different using php.

That's what I thought at first but when I seen the steam forums offline and now the google cached site for yesterday I know something happened.

The forums have been down for at least 24 hours, I'm presuming an upgrade of some kind due to the number of people registered which is now close to 1 million.

Maybe they've hit a problem and it's taking longer than expected but a short message explaining that would be nice, I wonder what the problem is :scratchchin:

Edit:

I've just found this though:

The plot thickens!

Addition:

After checking out a few more sites, seems that one website has been blamed for it (I won't post the name) although they deny the attack.

The official Steam forums have been taken down by Valve after they were hacked late last night. Users who attempted to visit the site before they were taken down were being redirected to /Removed/, a site offering gaming information, along with "warez, porn, hacking/security" and more.

However, despite the site's security/hacking focus, the owners of /Removed/, together with the site's subscribers, have denied any knowledge of the attack. While they're back online now, the /Removed/ forums went down for several hours, with the following message posted for everyone to see:

"/Removed/ Forum is currently unavailable In lights of someone crediting us for the recent breaches of steam forums, the board is offline. /Removed/ is not responsible."

This isn't the only hack referencing /Removed/ either. Twitter search results reveal the name appearing repeatedly in posts from what appear to be hacked or spamming accounts that include links to what may be malicious content.

Valve hasn't recommended that users change details such as passwords - but video game blog Kotaku recommends that if you use the same password for the Steam forums as you do for your Steam account, it might not be a bad idea to change it.

Valve has as yet given no indication that users' details may have been stolen.

I can't give the source as that gives the name of the hack site and I won't give them any attention.

Official word from Valve via Steam client and the forums main page:

10 November 2011

Dear Steam Users and Steam Forum Users:

Our Steam forums were defaced on the evening of Sunday, November 6. We began investigating and found that the intrusion goes beyond the Steam forums.

We learned that intruders obtained access to a Steam database in addition to the forums. This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked. We are still investigating.

The Steam video game service, used by 35 million people, has been compromised by hackers.

Its owner and operator, Valve, uncovered an intrusion into a user database while investigating a security breach of its discussion forums.

The attackers used login details from the forum hack to access a database that held ID and credit card data.

Valve said that, so far, it had no evidence that credit cards were being misused or Steam accounts abused.
