DICE modern setting getting stale FPS needs innovating

DICE GM Karl Magnus Troedsson has said the FPS genre needs to innovate as many studios aren’t taking “revolutionary,” or at “least evolutionary,” steps when it comes to tech as well as producing something other than a “modern setting.”

Speaking with Edge, Troedsson said the core FPS shooter crowd has “extremely high demands on what the games are,” and how they are developed.

“If [players] don’t see some kind of new, if not revolutionary then at least evolutionary, step of rendering in every game they will start to lose interest,” he said. “And I think that is what’s happening. Because a lot of franchises out there don’t take this seriously; to actually make sure that we don’t just challenge ourselves on the gameplay aspect, or perhaps some other area like distribution method, but also how it [feels], how it looks and how it sounds.

“It might just be a rendering feature but in the end it adds up to the complete experience of what we’re doing. I think we’re going to start seeing people moving away from the modern setting, because every now and again settings or themes start to get stale and then everyone jumps over.

“At some point dinosaurs are the hottest thing and everyone is making games with dinosaurs, but there are trends. It used to be WWII, and recently it’s been the modern era and people are now moving towards near future.”

Troedsson feels that a developer can only make so many games “in one particular era,” before it starts to get boring.

“I think it’s our responsibility as game developers to always push ourselves when it comes to the experience of games,” he said. “I’m not saying we’re going to build an FPS that will make you cry, or anything like that [laughs]. But we want people to be amazed when they look at our games. And I think this is more important than becoming number one… we want to make the best game that we can, and we want that game to be the best one on the market.

“If gamers think that, then we’ve done our job. We’re not there yet, but we’re working on it.”

Perhaps gamers would not get so bored so quickly if the games he/DICE produces have expectational PC features?

No VOIP? No demos? No dice...

(Sorry surfy, I owed you a corny pun for the chord reference earlier :) )

Battlefield 3:1945 please Dice.

They had BF1943 but it never made it to PC.

Honestly I haven't seen much advancement in FPS gaming (in BF and CoD anyway) since BF2 and CoD4.

If they don't do something soon to freshen things up, the FPS genre could look a bit dicey...

lol. your better than that :smooth:

As to the topic, I'd say 2143 w/ dx11.

But it would not have VOIP nor battle recorder, so no love for clans. Heck no love for the pubbers that get raped on clan servers w/ clannies on TS.

Problem is they thing more stats will keep people happy which is not the case. Seems many new games just focus on adding more stats and unlocks etc.

Where is the:

dynamic lighting / time of day

dynamic objective locations

dynamic map layout

etc etc

Playing the same exact maps gets boring for me in many games.

Imagine if the light direction changed and the m-com locations moved around to a few preset locations changed every time a new round started.

In BF3, TDM use random areas on the larger maps. I recall playing in the subway on metro during the beta as an example.

Crysis did the first two with their MP servers, but they had their own slue of problems. I don't know what's holding back developers in the sense of destruction and dynamic creation, some say it's the old in the tooth consoles that developers are mainly concerned with these days. If newly upgraded consoles ever come out, maybe we;ll see developers start pushing the envelope when it comes to destruction again?

But I think it's a tricky thing to do, map design becomes a whole other beast, when all the trees and buildings on a map can be destroyed.

When I played Left 4 dead 2, one of the things that bugged me the most was the fact that your teammates flashlights didn't light up anything, and it was only your flashlight that had any effect on the world. Valve was slacking.

Crytek seemed to be leading the charge in all things multiplayer gaming with Crysis back in 2008, but I think all the issues they hit, left a bad taste in their mouth. Crysis 2 multiplayer was a huge back peddle.

With that said, I think you're getting hung up on stats, we've had stats in all the multiplayer BF games, and we had the features that made past BF games great while also having stats. It's not that they are focusing on stats, it's just that they aren't putting in the features that made past games great.

Oh man, a WWII version on Frostbite 2 would be awesome!

Word.

Would be nice if they included some british vehicles. Driving a churchill tank in frostbite 2 would be great. B)

There was a time when we were very close to this. DICE had been taking pre-orders for the PC version of BF1943 before they canned it. But if I had an option, I'd vote for a true 2142 successor with Frostbite 2.

Outside of the FPS genre, I'm pretty excited for Command & Conquer Generals 2. Which is using the Frostbite 2 engine
