HardWare BAN

Recommended Posts

Hello again.

My clan had a server few months ago and we used to have it streamed. We are gonna reopen it in few weeks.

First time I tried to ban someone by using the GUID, it did not work, then I found out that like 95% of the brazilian servers are cracked, since there is no original Cod2 available / for sale here anymore, so, PB cannot get player GUIDs from cracked servers. I noticed that the administrator from the server Snipe's Killhouse (8.6.76.38:28960) "cleans" his server by using hardware bans. His server's version is 1.0, so, no PB. I would like to know how I can perform a hardware BAN, with and without PB. I know it can be bypassed, but it's the best choice for my server. I know that cheaters from my country can barely install their cheats, none of them will find out how to bypass the hardware bans.

Thanks again for your attention,

G. Schmidt.

You can't, only EvenBalance could; if they did.

If you can't ban GUIDs then IP banning is your next, but lousy, option.

Any idea of how Snipe applies the hardware bans? I cant contact him.

Just speculating.....

If he is hosting the server himself (Not using a game server provider), then players would be connecting through his router. His router might show the MAC addresses of connected players. He might then "ban" their MAC addresses (by Blocking those MAC addresses in his router).

iptables on Linux environment do also a pretty nice job :D

Ah, well, regarding hardware bans... as some said before, only EvenBalance can issue them (see also: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PunkBuster#Global_GUID_bans_and_Hardware_bans).

The MAC address gets stripped off at every router hop and takes on the MAC of that router. If you got your server to show you the MAC address of every connecting player, they would all have the same one: the closest router/firewall/pix to the server.

The PB client has a way of picking up the client MAC but even balance no longer uses those for hardware bans I've read. It's too large of a privacy issue, plus game developers would prefer they be able to buy a game over and over again.

Hi Botax - Thanks for that information. Both points make sense! :D
