  1. This is extremely, extremely unfortunate. I cannot believe any developer would make such a drastic mistake as to make a Steamworks game support a Punkbuster level which would read the Steam Overlay as a threat - that's just insane.

I really wish people would better understand the nature of Punkbuster vs VAC. Really the key differences are this: Punkbuster makes loud, public examples out of players - often ones that did absoultely nothing wrong. Because people see "player kicked" messages, they think they're being protected from cheaters, when in reality, this is pretty far from the truth - most PunkBuster supported games are swarming with them on a very extreme level. Where as VAC doesn't go that route, it hides in the background, watching your behavior patterns and then dishes out a VAC ban. In many VAC games you rarely see a cheater, and when you do, they almost always have VAC bans on their account and almost always end up perma-banned if you check their account later. It just doesn't do noisy mid-game kicks.

That's on top of the fact VAC isn't nearly as invasive, doesn't have extremely terrible exploits including ones that actually use the memory scanning against the users by exploiting it and doesn't even think of recommending things like running pbsetup every single time you want to run a game.

In short, if both of these systems were real police agencies, PunkBuster would be the one stringing up people along the road all of the time to re-assure the populace they are being protected, even if those people didn't actually do anything wrong. Where as VAC operates more similar to modern police, gathering evidence before issuing a pretty firm judgement. VAC bans are also much, much harder to circumvent as they impact your Steam account, where you likely have a lot of games.

What many of you may not know is why PunkBuster is even still used, and how it's company is still in business. I've worked with several game developers and I can tell you every single one of them have zero respect for it. The word "placebo" is used very often, and that's exactly what it is: One that does more harm than good, too, since it does the aforementioned security vulnerabilities and kicking of legit players on a semi-regular basis. In short, the company uses a simple marketing tactic of making players believe it's doing well from the kicks, which they then use to sell to Publisher Producers.

Publisher Producers are the people on the publishing side of games, that honestly often have almost no technical knowledge of games. There are of course exceptions but I have, honest to God, known producers of games that didn't know how to open the console disc trays before. These people are sold on PunkBuster helping to sell the game for "cheap and easy," and they often jump on it out of sheer ignorance as to it's actual capabilities. This is then forced on development houses as part of their contract, regardless if the developer actually wants to implement it or not. In some cases, smaller developers will use PunkBuster for similar reasons of ignorance, except purely so the user base can "sleep easy" thinking cheaters are actually being stopped when, in fact, they're really not.

The mere fact people are impressed with ban lists is the entire problem. I'm sure the local police force could arrest countless people a day on every suspicion that even remotely entered their heads, too, but ultimately this means they will be simply getting a large number of "criminals" out of people who were doing nothing, while wasting every drop of time and energy on it, letting the vast majority of criminals who aren't being totally obvious do whatever they want. It's just a broken system.

The long and short of it? VAC is far superior in every single way to PB and they positively do not need to be combined - and shouldn't be, really. It's my hope that more games will be supporting Steamworks and ditching PunkBuster in the future, and I know people who have outright canceled their RO2 orders because they don't want to deal with it's insane number of headaches only to have a game end up littered with cheating anyway.

PS: My personal experience with PunkBuster has been playing exactly two games with it in the past 3 years, in which I've probably been kicked or banned dozens of times for doing absoultely nothing cheat oriented. Being thrown off servers for the act of throwing a cheat-free grenade while at least 3 people on the server are spinning in circles aimbot'ing head shots is the best summary one could ever give this hopelessly outdated product that should have a bad memory from the the early 2000s.

    Nah.

  2. Add to all these anticheat options the probability of a mostly adult player base, and you have the makings for a pretty solid, cheat-free gaming environment. Most of the younger crowd, with the exception of some of the more mature younger guys, will be off to MW3 land and leave us to actually enjoy a gaming night without so much hacking worries. This, in itself, is a breath of fresh air. More proof that the universe has an intelligent creator and that Darwin was off his rocker.

  3. Let me know when its in the walmart bargin bin, and I'll pick it up for single player.

The vid was a yawn fest. But whatever... Different strokes for different folks I suppose.

    butt

To be honest butt, I wouldn't even recommend this game for $5.00. The singleplayer is such a scripted snoozefest, I believe a person could literally die from boredom playing it. I really mean that. It sucks very, very badly. And yes, I stupidly bought it on day 1 for full price.

  4. Don't really understand people preordering any game, really. It's not like there will be a shortage on day one, so it's not first come first serve. Also, giving EA my cash 4 months early and them getting the benefit out of it without paying me any interest doesn't sit well with me.

  5. Voted yes. It's a decent shooter. Had fun with it for a year. Vehicles get to be aggravating on some maps after awhile. Dice supported it well for a year. Now it's over and they are pushing their BF3 thing. No map tools and no new maps ever again means "thanks for playing, now standby while we hype you up to spend another $60".

  6. I believe BF3 will be fun enough to play. No doubt there will be issues, but they kept the patches coming for BC2, so I'm not too worried about that. I do think that it won't be any more PC-centric, feature wise at least, than BC2 is. I don't hold my breath anymore for the AAA titles. The hype machines keep grinding out the "ZOMG's", but the games are generally pretty flaccid. I'm sure I'll buy it and spend at least a year having some good times and lot's of rage quits with it. I will say this. If Dice was smart, they would release another map pack for BC2, just to keep people into the BF name until BF3 releases. But, what do I know?

  7. Uninstalled. Too many other options on the horizon for games. No need for aggravation and screwing around with another turd. We know where this game is headed already. They have taken another PC game and turned it into an Xbox game. Period. They can say all they want about the "PC features", but the proof isn't there. It's the same old EA stuff and another MoH in the making. None for me, thanks.

  8. I can't even try it. "MyCrysis" website is not letting me register. Must be overload. Why the F*K wouldn't you make sure your site can handle the increased traffic when you release something like this? It's not like Crytek is some low budget indie studio. Anyway, if aim assist is in the game, I'm not even interested. Speaking of indie games, I'll keep waiting for a new one from one of them. Let EA and Craptivision have the customers they obviously seek to please.

  9. Three total conversion mods that are being developed for RO2 right now, before the regular game even releases. These will be put out there in intervals. They should keep this game interesting for a long time to come. Plus, with mod tools out of the box, there will be tons of custom content out there. TWI has also stated that they will be releasing a crap-ton of DLC for it also. Sounds like a winner. Oh yeah, server files will be totally accessible.

  10. List of recent games with no public server files now include: BF Heroes, Bad Company 2, Medal of Honor 2010, BF Play4Free, and now Crysis 2. Then add CoDBO to that list with the possibility of future CoD games doing the same.

Sadly the majority don't care about it so the small minority who don't buy them won't effect the profit margin by much.

Yup, I agree. But, it isn't so much about hurting EA, it's about spending my cash on something that will satisfy me. I think the indie companies will benefit from such a choice. The small PC devs are popping up all over the place these days. Granted, some of the indie games aren't that good, but, every once in awhile, you strike gold. It is the gold that I seek.

  11. It does show a possible trend among EA games that no public server files will become the standard for any game they release.

Whatever. Vote with your cash. I don't think it's a possible trend, I think it is THE new trend, and the way it will be with EA with every game from now on. It's their choice and it's my choice not to buy their games also. Simple as that. BC2 and that fail called MoH were the last ones I'll ever buy with that system.

  12. As tempting as BF3 is right now, due to the masterful PR campaign and trickled out, carefully planned hype building, I can't help but find myself yawning. As HSMagnet said, very nicely I might add, "zomglookatalltheschtuffwearedoing", it's getting a bit dry. In the end, BF3 may be a bit of fun to play, but, I'll be willing to bet it will be business as usual in the end.

Game hype has gotten to be so redundant it's actually boring and degrading. Here's an idea Dice. Hire John Gibson to promote your game. Let the man tell about the features in clear, concise terms. Let him speak openly about the game and give ass-kicking demos of it. If a feature isn't going to be available, then Mr. Gibson will just say "no, that won't be in there". Much better than the current community manager method of saying "ghskfefklzdmvdlvsdllkzffkkl" What did he just say? Idk, it's cloaked in PR speak, please spend the next few weeks trying to decipher it in forums and webcasts, be sure to add plenty of opinion and speculation.

  13. This game does look interesting, I like KF and The Ball from Tripwire so will keep an eye on this one.

Yeah, I love both of those games also. Actually, I like anything TWI does. Real games for gamers by real gamers. Screw the pandering and PR speak, I'm over that with the blockbuster guys. Time to support a game company that actually feeds my needs.
