Release notes for 8/20 Update

Gameplay:

• Added the Weapons Course to the game.

UI:

• Voice notification can now show more players talking.

• Updated the freeze panel to no longer show the heath for your killer in competitive mode.

• Added an option in the menu to disable the game instructor messages.

• Update to the player info panel to no longer show achievement alerts.

• Update to the leaderboard screen to default to “Friends” filter.

• Added the “Total Games Played” leaderboard category.

• Updated the Play With Friends screen:

-- Made the chat window bigger so text is no longer cut off.

-- Adjusted the size of dimming when the focus changes between friends list and lobby list. It used to obscure the friends list and a little of the chat. Now it only obscures the friends list.

Bug Fixes:

• Updated the radio command panel so that the radio panel doesn't end up at the top of the screen during a mode that doesn't have a money panel.

• Set Classic Casual deadtalk to 0 to encourage fair play.

• Fixed the freeze panel dynamic positioning that would allow it to go too high.

• Fixed a missing text string displayed when player is not connected to Steam in leaderboards.

• Fixed a bug where the Mag7 could be bought by Ts via console commands.

• Fixed a bug where adding favorite server was not functional in the Community Server UI.

• Fixed a bug in the Play With Friends lobby where using left and right on keyboard or gamepad made the screen unresponsive.

• Fixed a bug in the Play With Friends lobby where typing in the Chat window would cause player names to flicker in the friends list.

• Fix for voice/chat/radio messages. Better unified the handling of voice and chat messages.

-- Chat messages now correctly use sv_allchat (instead of sv_alltalk), which should be more consistent with other source games.

-- Team-only communications now are not affected by sv_allchat/sv_alltalk, which means that private communications to one's team stay private, regardless of game mode.

-- Team-only communication is also not overridden by sv_full_alltalk, which allows teams to privately communicate strategy during warmup time and intermission.

-- Radio commands are considered team-only, so these should still be usable for tactics during games with sv_alltalk enabled (e.g. casual).

-- Spectators no longer hear team-only communications, except when sv_spec_hear is mode 2 (hear/see comms of the spectated teams).

Audio:

• Increased the audible range of the c4 plant and disarm sounds.

• Fixed audio randomly chirping/screeching on certain levels.

Matchmaking:

• Tuned lobby distance computations when performing matchmaking.

• Exposed a convar ("mm_csgo_community_search_players_min") for community quick match to look for community servers having at least specified number of human players already playing.

Community:

• Shipped zombie model to support the Zombie Mod

Valve updated Counter-Strike: Global Offensive today with two additional maps and a refit of the Classic Competitive matchmaking system. Vertigo, a classic Defusal map, returns with a Source facelift to its multi-leveled mayhem and shadowy camping nest corners, while Monastery chills things out with an Arms Race among the snowy promenades of a windswept temple.

Classic Competitive matchmaking now involves queuing up until 10 player matches are found before starting a game. Group queuing and matchmaking with friends are also possible through a “Play with Friends” option. Head over to Global Offensive’s website for a short FAQ on the new matchmaking.

And we didn't have to pay $15! SUCK IT COD/BF3 (even though I play regular BF3)! (Sorry)

What's your plan for how the game will evolve?

Chet Faliszek: The team's goal is just to keep updating and keep improving. They're connected in with the community. I know updating the spectator modes and all of that. As it's becoming adopted by more and more leagues, making sure the tools are there for those leagues to be able to run good tournaments.

Starting today at 10am until Sunday at 1pm PST – Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is free. You can click this link, visit this page, or launch steam and start downloading the game now. All weekend you can play the complete game.

CS:GO is more than just the best looking CS. We have expanded the game with new characters, new weapons, new maps, and new game modes. So you don’t get overwhelmed, let’s break down the game modes and give you a suggestion on where to start based on your skill level.

For everyone, a good first stop is the Weapon Course where you will get some quick tips and training on new mechanics.

If you have never played a first person shooter – first, what’s wrong with you? You have been missing out. A good intro that isn’t about map strategy, team goals, etc – is Arms Race. It’s pretty simple. Kill the guys who don’t look like you. Every time you kill one, you get a new weapon. There are some things that happen at the end with a knife if you are the top player in kills, but do you really think that is going to happen? Okay, let’s pretend it does. You get a golden knife – then what? Stab a guy and win the game. If you do that, you better take a screen shot and post it on the CS:GO Game Hub – otherwise no one will believe you.

If you do actually play first person shooters but maybe haven’t played much Counter-Strike or it has been a bit – try Demolition Mode. These are small intense maps that remove the buy round at the start and throw players right into the action. Plant the bomb, defuse the bomb, kill a guy – it all helps.

Has it been a while since you last played CS? The franchise has existed for 12 years, so at this point you could have last played in 6th grade and since graduated college, gotten married, and had your first kid by now – so we’ll excuse your rusty skills if you are bouncing the new kid on your lap as you play. A word of warning on that – don’t play Competitive Mode if you think you need to drop out mid-game or just want to drop in and out of games, instead play Casual Mode. It is classic Counter-Strike with some relaxed rules on purchasing weapons and we leave all talk on so players can chat while playing.

Are you a CS player? Think you have what it takes to win but have been scared to try CS:GO? If you think you are up for it – jump into Competitive Mode. This is where it is all about skill, win 10 matches and you will get put into a Skill Group, keep winning and you’ll be placed into a higher Skill Group, lose and you might get placed lower. Match making will make sure you keep playing in games at your skill level. Leaving a match will put you into a timeout period for Competitive match making. We even have a FAQ here for you if you want more information.

In today’s update, we’ve introduced a new commendation and reporting system. Now you can tell other players when they’ve been particularly naughty or nice.

To use the system: bring up the scoreboard, use the arrow keys to select a player, and press ENTER.

You can also mute a player’s voice and text by selecting them and pressing DELETE.

COMMEND

Have you been playing with someone nice? A great teacher, a friendly teammate, or a strong leader? Let them know by commending them!

Commendations are anonymous, and you are limited to three every 24 hours. When you have been commended, you’ll see an icon on the main menu that will tell you why (and how many times) you were commended.

REPORT

Sometimes you’ll find an especially naughty player. In this case, you have two options: mute, and report.

Reports are also anonymous, but they are unlimited – you can report and mute as many players as you’d like. We store all of the reports that are submitted, but players will not be told when they have been reported.

Release Notes for 12/24/2012

[ MISC ]

* Added the ability to commend and report players from the player details view that can be accessed in the scoreboard.

* Number of competitive wins, and unique commendations are now shown in the main menu along with skill group.

* Competitive scoreboard will show number of competitive wins needed to display your skill group if you have not displayed it yet.

* Fixed movement on ladders ignoring the walk button. Now climbing ladders while holding walk is slow and silent, which fixes previous exploit of being able to climb ladders at fullspeed without making sound.

* Fixed failure to fire after weapon switching away from a reload and back (fake-reloading).

* Whitelisted tv_password convar to set GOTV password.

* Reduced fps in main menu when not connected to a server from 300 fps to 120 fps to help with laptops and desktop video cards doing excessive work. Exposed fps_max_menu convar to control fps in main menu.

* Added one more minute of grace period for players to reconnect to their competitive match before a cooldown for failing to reconnect is assigned. Cooldown for failing to reconnect is now assigned after player has remained disconnected for at least 4 minutes, not counting the round of disconnection and not counting the round in which 4 minutes grace period elapses.

* Fixed Hammer crash on exit.

* Added some holiday cheer.

First off, we’d like to thank the good folks in the CS:GO community who’ve volunteered to be Investigators in our Overwatch beta experiment. For those of you who haven’t heard about it yet, Overwatch gives the CS:GO community the power to report, review and give temporary bans to consistently disruptive “problem” players, and it’s been encouragingly successful. (Check out the Overwatch FAQ for details.)

So far, Overwatch Investigators have found evidence of disruptive behavior in 90% of highly-reported cases, with the decision being unanimous in the vast majority of cases. In addition to our standard test cases, we recently added demos of pro CS:GO players (specifically NiP and Quantic) to the test pool. Every single test case has been correctly dismissed as “Insufficient Evidence”, with no false convictions made.

In other news, you may have noticed that we opened the Steam Trading Card beta a few weeks ago. Since then, over 20,000 CS:GO badges have been crafted from over 120,000 trading cards! For those of you in the Steam Trading Card beta that who’ve been helping us by participating, thank you.

Today we’re updating the trading card art and badges to their final forms. Here’s a look at the new Steam badges. Let us know what you think.
