Apple Wins Lawsuit Against Samsung

Recommended Posts

Apple won the lawsuit against Samsung just now:

SAN JOSE, Calif. – A jury has ruled for Apple in its huge smartphone patent infringement case involving Samsung and ordered Samsung to pay $1.5 billion.

The verdict was reached Friday.

In its lawsuit filed last year, Apple Inc. had demanded $2.5 billion while accusing Samsung of ripping off the design technology of iPhones and iPads.

During closing arguments at the trial, Samsung attorney Charles Verhoeven called that demand ridiculous and asked the jury to award Samsung $399 million after claiming Apple used Samsung Electronics Co. technology without proper compensation.

The two companies lead the $219 billion market for smartphones and computer tablets. They are enmeshed in similar lawsuits in the United Kingdom, Germany and Australia.

Amazing now many sites are reporting 1.5 billion. It's 1.05 not 1.5 billion :P

1 billion, 51 million 855 thousand dollars damages

Samsung's response

Today’s verdict should not be viewed as a win for Apple, but as a loss for the American consumer. It will lead to fewer choices, less innovation, and potentially higher prices. It is unfortunate that patent law can be manipulated to give one company a monopoly over rectangles with rounded corners, or technology that is being improved every day by Samsung and other companies. Consumers have the right to choices, and they know what they are buying when they purchase Samsung products. This is not the final word in this case or in battles being waged in courts and tribunals around the world, some of which have already rejected many of Apple’s claims. Samsung will continue to innovate and offer choices for the consumer.

Paul O’Brien, founder of MoDaCo, a site focused on Windows smartphones, said this sounded like good news for Microsoft and its Windows phone platform.

Hear that noise? That’s the sound of Android manufacturers ringing Microsoft right now.

Apple lawyers will tomorrow [21st September 2012] ask a Californian judge to triple patent damages against rival Samsung to a colossal $3 billion.

It comes as the two sides meet again since a jury ruled that Samsung had wilfully copied Apple’s iPhone and iPad designs, awarding the world’s biggest company $1.05 in damages and paving the way for a US sales ban on about a dozen Samsung devices.

Now Apple is upping the ante by asking Judge Lucy Koh to triple the compensation sum – an application which, if granted, would make it the biggest ever damage payment sought in a technology patent dispute.

Behind the scenes Apple lawyers feel there is a strong case for Samsung to withdraw completely from the US market, leaving it open to proprietary devices from itself and Microsoft.

Maybe they are mad over samsung's recent ads

So I was going to get the new Galaxy SIII when my contract ran up, does this mean I should try and get it as soon as possible?

Might not be a bad idea.

I had to laugh at this
