Sony plans to email its PlayStation Network customers to warn them of a security breach that may have led to their credit card information being stolen. Here is the full text of Sony's statement.tation network
Sony has warned its customer that hackers have stolen the following information about PSN customers:

Name

Address

Country

Email address

Date of birth

PSN login and password

Well that's a hell of a PR disaster.

Worse still if they knew they had an external breach at _least_ 7 days ago but felt a small comment buried in a blog would suffice.

Hombrew rootkits, data protection and a failure to inform ... Sony is going from bad to worse. The fact they are "not sure" if credit card details have also been stolen would be laughable if it wasn't so serious.

Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained.

This is one reason i don't want every game to use Steamworks as it does paint a bigger bullseye on Steam.

Even a few polls on EAUK forums asking DICE to use Steamworks thus requiring steam:

I like steam but honestly I don't want all games to use it. Don't like the "all my eggs in one basket" approach.

Sony Computer Entertainment has issued an update on last week's "external intrusion" on its PlayStation Network, an attack that forced the network offline and may have exposed the personal information of millions of members. On the company's PlayStation.blog, senior director of corporate communications Patrick Seybold writes that the PlayStation maker will be "taking steps to make our services safer and more secure than ever before."

That includes "a new system software update that will require all users to change their password once PlayStation Network is restored." Presumably, that software update will come to both the PSP and PlayStation 3 within the week. Currently, PSN accounts are locked out of the system, making a change to personal information and passwords impossible.

Furthermore, Sony says it is "initiating several measures that will significantly enhance all aspects of PlayStation Network's security and your personal data, including moving our network infrastructure and data center to a new, more secure location, which is already underway."

Sony writes that it still plans to have its PlayStation Network back online by next week, offering the caveat "we want to be very clear that we will only restore operations when we are confident that the network is secure."
