Yes, PnkBstrA should be showing in the processes tab in task manager. Have you tried starting the process by right clicking on it in services and selecting restart?

Glad it's working. Many have probably seen this issue in the past, and my personal advice on the PB install has always been the same since the new system came around, and perhaps that idea needs to be broken down and stickied here and else-where. Install the pbsetup.exe in a given game's pb folder, and update per-game, rather than trying update all games from one. I've got 4 current pb-supported games installed, and run pbsetup for each one individually, and have had no issues. BF2, Enemy Territory, Call of Duty 4 and Enemy Territory:Quake Wars.

You need to open up your control panel, navigate to Administrative Tools/Services and find PnkBsterA in the list, make sure it's set to Automatic rather than Manual or Stopped. PnkBstrB only runs when you load a PB-enabled game, so you'll want to keep this window opened, and start the game, then log into a PB server. To minimize the game, just hit your Windows Start key. Now refresh the services list, and find PnkBstrB in the list and make sure it's set to Automatic as well. It sounds like you've got it set to either Manual or Stopped at the moment, and thus it's taking a lot longer to load up and make connection with the PB master servers. Your kick is coming from it timing out. You'll also notice that you end up being able to log in and load up maps on servers a lot faster with it set this way.

Which game? Games like Enemy Territory, for example, you can create a word filter and it just auto-mutes the player and removes the word from his text.

PB Bans Players for Cookies?
RoadWarrior replied to spongeblunt's topic in Streaming Questions and Troubleshooting
There's one born every minute, or so they say. I think this one falls under the idea of "If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bulls*t!" Good thing we're not easily fooled. ;) -
2 minutes is a temporary kick. That's the time-limit of the ban. ;)
-
You can change the default temp-ban timelimit in your game's config, usually included in the pbsv.cfg section to a lower time-limit, or simply don't kick them via rcon. A lot of games have other settings that work as well, and do the kicking for you without the ban, but the player may need to restart his game in order to come back. Which game are you referring to in particular? Settings vary from one to the next, and it's always advisable to post which game you're referring to so that more specific help can be given.

I've had to help a few people who make the mistake of running the PBUpdate.exe from the folder they downloaded it to. It's apparently a fairly common mistake. It's fine to download it to one location, but if you've got several games installed, or even just one game, move the file to your game's install directory and particularly to it's PB folder, and then run it. I've personally chosen to run it from each installed game singularly, rather than letting it detect all PB games, just in case any of the files are different per game that may end up causing conflicts, and I feel that is the best method for others as well.
-
Temp bans are usually for a default of two minutes. You simply ride it out and come back after the time-limit. And yes, it would happen everytime you kick someone via rcon.

PnkBstrA.exe is a running Windows Service. PnkBsterB.exe is a Windows service that gets exec'd by A when you log into a PunkBuster game. Copies are found in the Win32\sys\drivers folder as well as your game(s) PB folder(s). Each Punkbuster game you have installed will have a copy, while the sys folder will only have one copy of each.

Part of the price you pay for playing a free game. Active Admin can do some damage against hackers by streaming, and by uploading pbss and demo's here along with the appropriate log information from your pb folder, and this does make it much harder for the hackers to play their game. Grabbing a new GUID in ET has always been a problem as it's a free game, and the GUID is generated from the master server, as you've stated. That's something you've got to be willing to deal with, though. Being patched to 2.60b will help to some degree, the larger number of hackers reside in the 2.55 version of the game that is plumb-full of security holes and other exploitable bugs within.

Modern Rcon works really well, but then again, I suppose you have to have at least some basic working knowledge of servers prior to using such a program to begin with. I first set up my server by manually editting the config in wordpad and then just uploading and rebooting. Modern Rcon has been a real time-saver, imo, as I can make any and all changes I need from it.

Are you and your brother using the same registration CD-KEY? I had to ask, btw. Or is one of you using a downloaded version of the game with a "cracked" key? I asked because downloaded "cracked" versions often come with unwelcome guests such as hacks that are slip-streamed into the installation, and you don't get a choice about the installation. Secondly, the key is likely a legit one that someone, somewhere is using. Both are likely reasons for the above-stated issues. I can't assume this to be true, so I'm asking, but from both sets of posts, would look to be a viable explanation to your problems. An added FYI about hacks. They often come with some not so wonderful additions that stream information back to the creator about you and your computer. These are harder to get rid of that one might think. To date I've had a few post such on my own forums after the streaming configs busted them for hacking, and had quite a chuckle about all of the work they had to go through to get rid of those issues. I would also recommend that you refrain from using profanity in your posts, it generally tends to show some truths, regardless of how you might or might not think. The one who comes here with a polite post is likely to get more attention and help. Post profanity, and we're all likely to write you off, admin will lock the thread, and you'll see yourself blocked from the site. It's never welcome, where politeness is dealt with in much the opposite manner. ;) This, btw, will hold true for ANY forum you visit.

The fog does definitely cause some older vid cards to "chug" a bit when encountered, but I'd have to say I agree with it as being an unfair advantage over those that still see it, and perhaps a cheat. I do have a feeling that removing it was probably more for fps stability than anything else, especially for those who don't have high-end vid cards.
-
I personally don't care how good the game looks. I'm running a crappy 7300 Nvidia card till the next paycheck kicks in, and then I'll have one of two 8800 GT's in place. Even then, I'll likely revert to the fps tweaks and care less about how good it looks, as long as it runs as smooth as possible.

cod4 and re instaling windows
RoadWarrior replied to pf_robHQ's topic in Streaming Questions and Troubleshooting
Lucky you. I had a hard-drive cash in it's chips on me, so I get to start over. No chance of recovery of anything on it.... :( On the up-side, building up a wicked new system, so the pending trade-off was worth it. I can frag enough to get the unlocks again, and the rank. Half the challenge is working from the ground up anyways. ;) Good info to have for the future, though, should one need to format for any particular reason. -
Try hard deleting your PB folder, then create a new one, slide pbsetup.exe into it, and run it from scratch. I've run into similar errors in the past, and that's worked to fix it.

just limit the line to IN 0 3 instead of IN 0 2 and you'll be fine. It still needs a range, and as stated above, the setting can open some doors to current known hacks. No point in removing the line altogether, but at least increase it to in-game setting values. Other settings that are also openned will manifest themselves, between the hacks and what the game does via in-game settings, as time goes on, and a more refined system will come of it. It's better to take the err of a side of caution, rather than open a door to more hacking, imo. I just changed the setting to allow what the game allowed, and would not personally recommend anything else, perhaps my humble opinion on things, but it was an In-game option that allowed that setting, rather than a manual edit of my config. Anything that the actual game allows for options need to be allowed, or the game has to limit them. As far as cheat detection goes, I'll let the experts do their part there, and post their findings on that issue via the config. I'll only post an error such as this when the game itself says different, for stock option edits within the game itself.
-
Just a heads up, and yes, I do realize I can alter the setting within the pbsv.cfg file to allow the range, currently the default is pb_sv_cvar "r_picmip" IN 0 2 I made some alterations from within the game's options that sets picmap to 3. In the game, if you change the texture quality to "manual" and turn all the new settings that come up to low, the result is a setting of 3 and the ensuing warnings. I'm not sure if the range can go much higher via game-side alterations, as I have not found anything higher than 3, as yet, that can be done without manually altering the config in wordpad or something like it. Default should be at least IN 0 3, though, for the pbsv.cfg file.

PunkBuster kick - Corrupt Packet flow
RoadWarrior replied to k0nfusion's topic in General Discussions
The problem could be related to the amount of "wait time" between screen shots in your config, as well as what a given player's network settings are at. Players also have the ability to set wait times on their end, via their own personal pb settings, should they want to do a bit of research, sadly, most of them don't. It's all on the evenbalance website, though, and reading is for free, and the time you're willing to put into it. It's different per-game, so I don't personally want to sit here and explain all of that. -
Are you sure a server admin didn't just use rcon and pb_sv_ban on you? Sounds like that's more likely the case than PB actually banning you.

et_admin was a fantastic mod for it's time, but it was also a mod meant to run over a mod, or with etmain. That means it has to work with etpro, etpub, shrub, and etmain. It was also meant for linux, but can be run on Windows servers with Cygwin, if you've got .ssh install access. Mostly it's age tends to make it what it is, but don't condemn it in any way, it did very, very well for it's time. For the pub-style mods these days, it's not needed. They've all got their own native shrubbot support, admin-commands and abilities. For etpro, KMOD was released, and a new version is being worked on that makes it massively more adept and adds many features et_admin does not have. It's also coded in lua, so the coding is much easier to keep clean. Added to which, it is much simpler to install, and can run on either server-platform, Linux or Windows, without the need for an over-lay program.

Strange fact-still wondering how
RoadWarrior replied to Paparas_On_Dope's topic in General Discussions
If the server admin that banned you can not search the MBI, suggest to that person that someone within the clan do so, and verify your IP vs the wannabe player using your name that is banned via the configs here. Streaming admin have tools accessible to them to cross-reference you, your guid, IP, name, etc that can and will verify your innocence or guilt. Banned by server-admin means someone did a local ban on you on that particular server, and if they based it off name only, I can understand it as a temp-measure until they look into the issue further, but by all means contact them, give them your IP/user-name/GUID info and let them work on it from there. You did the right thing by not handing out your cd-key, and please do not ever do that for any reason. Good luck with the clan-server in question, it's by no means an indication of how pbbans or it's members act, btw. Bans sometimes get placed on particular servers for reasons of their owners/clan-admin only, and pbbans can't be held accountable for those by any means. Any bans placed directly by pbbans are done via GUID only, and only with valid proof of hacking. Any and all other bans need to be taken up with server-admin of said-server or EvenBalance.com if the ban is PB-related, not to be confused with pbbans-related.
