Also the paid side of COD Elite costs $50 per year.

 

Players who purchase an annual premium membership to Call of Duty Elite will receive "every piece of downloadable content [for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3] for the year," Hirshberg said during a press preview at this weekend's Call of Duty XP convention. He estimated 20 pieces of content in all, including map packs, missions for Modern Warfare 3's Spec Ops mode, additional unspecified game modes and more. Premium Elite subscribers will also get it first and faster, he said.

 

"In the past, we offered it four times a year," Hirshberg said of standard Call of Duty map pack releases, typically sold as a bundle every few months. "Premium will get it monthly."

 

Maps and other content downloaded via one's premium Elite subscription will still be yours even if you let your premium membership lapse, the company said. Players won't be required to maintain an ongoing paid subscription (a la Sony's PlayStation Plus) to access their digital goods downloaded through Elite.

 

Premium Elite memberships also allow players to take part in daily competitions for virtual and real prizes—iPads, for example. Activision says these competitions "aren't just for the pros." Players of all skill levels can take part, they say, with competition matches "managed and refereed by real people 24/7."

You may have seen a snippet of Kill Confirmed in the leaked-early multiplayer trailer. That's the one with the big glowing dog tags that drop from corpses. Those dog tags are how players confirm kills in this Team Deathmatch variant. Kills don't count as a point for your team until you or one of you allies grabs a dead man's dropped dog tags. That adds an intriguing layer of strategy to Team Deathmatch, as opposing players can grab the dog tags of their fallen teammates before you do. And if they see one of their comrades lying dead, dog tags floating above their body, they'll know where your headed if you want to score.

We're using Steamworks, which includes VAC, but have also done a lot of security work on the back end to address cheating.

Anyone remember IWNet + VAC and how that turned out

 

Cheat / Hack Free Games: The biggest benefit of using IWnet by far is the fact that you don't have to worry about joining a server full of aim-bots, wallhacks, or cheaters. Or relying on the server admin of the server to constantly be monitoring, banning, and policing it. Modern Warfare 2 on PC allows us to control the quality of the game much more than ever before as well as utilizing the VAC (Valve-Anti-Cheat) system to keep games clean of hackers and cheaters.

VAC has a big advantage over anything else ...it's absolutely free :P

 

It always brings the old adage to mind;

"You get what you pay for."

 

They should offer server admins the "perk" of choosing VAC or PB or both ..... now that really would be an innovative step forward for MW3 and Activision/infinity ward/sledgehammer.

If the devs of RO2:HOS can do it, the question must be asked ... why cant all game devs do it :scratchchin:

Ease of integration and $$$

VAC has a nice simple API for devs to utilize (see examples below) and rolls in nicely with the rest of the steam features (friends lists etc). Also as fozzer pointed out ... it's free.

I have not seen PB's export functions other than small parts of pseudo code (*cough* PBSS *cough*) but I'm guessing it has far more complexities.

What annoys me are people that think VAC didn't work well because MW2 never had dedicated servers. Well duh, the reason games with dedicated servers has less cheaters is because server admins are banning more of them. But even that fails without a way to easily share bans. A cheater joins a VAC server, you ban him then he joins another server and cheats again. No real punishment while his cheat is undetected from VAC.

Looking at free public cheat forums is a good indication. Anytime a cheat is detected they will post "detected" like crazy.

 

One popular CoDBO hack was released on Nov 22, 2010 and still remains undetected (it's been updated with each patch). One popular MW2 one was released on May 18, 2010 and detection posts started around Nov 4, 2010. That's undetected for over 5 months. Both are completely free and accessible to anyone. Since I currently don't have access to some popular private hack forums, I don't know how long they are undetected for.

 

And before the "MW2 never had dedicated servers" post occurs, It has nothing to do with it as VAC is clientside (Downloads a DLL from steam when joining a VAC enabled game).

Also Homefront has dedicated servers and look how that ended up. VAC doesn't change because they move from P2P to dedicated servers.

 

If Tripwire can use VAC and PB then no reasons others can't. Best of both worlds.
